Fundraising Events and Capital Campaign
Charities holds several fundraising events during the year. The Annual Scholarship Luncheon and Fashion is held each year on the third Sunday in May. In 2010, the event will be held on Sunday, May 16 at 1:00 pm at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD. More than 800 members, dignitaries, and guests along with scholarship recipients will attend the annual event. The fashions keep our guests coming back each year. The funds raised through the event are used in part to support our cultural, academic and health-related activities including the scholarships that are recognized at the event. Our goal is to raise at least $15,000 annually through this event. This year plan to provide $40,000 in scholarships to 38 Prince George’s County students on the basis of merit and need.
Our grassroots event is the 5K Run Walk for the Health of It at Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro, MD. The event is held each year on the last Saturday in September and will be held on September 25, 2010. Each year the walk attracts over 200 runners, walkers, sponsors and contributors from across the region who complete the 3.5 mile course. Our goal is to raise at least $20,000 annually to support our health, educational and family service activities.
This year funds raised from our Annual Cotillion/Beautillion will also be used to support our programs of service including the opportunity for disadvantaged youth to participate in the event. The Annual Cotillion/Beautillion is a formal affair where high school seniors, both female and male students, are presented to society. The students, their parents and an escort must attend a regiment of rehearsals and an etiquette workshop leading up to the Cotillion/Beautillion. High school juniors may also participate, however, unlike the seniors, they will be introduced to society. The event was held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD.
We are also interested in grant opportunities and welcome collaborative efforts with organizations that would like to partner with us. We have a team of grantwriters who are eager to respond to grant solicitations at all levels. Please contact Ms. Jean Humphrey at humphreyceds@aol.com about potential grant opportunities.
THE IVY YOUTH AND FAMILY CENTER –THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Charities has launched an aggressive capital campaign to develop the Ivy Youth and Family Center, a facility that will meet the needs of the citzens whom we serve across the count. We are seeking a location in central Prince George's County in a community where the social services that we offer will have the greatest merit. The Center will house our administrtaive offices, meeting spaces and a banquet hall. Other social service agencies will be invited to share our facility where we can provide a one-stop program of comprehensive services for the community. Member contributions along with governmental support have helped us to meet the first phase of our building effort. We are eagerly seeking funds from corporate sponsors, businesses and philanthropists to help us establish this important center that we are designing to serve the citizens of Prince George's County, MD.
Capital Goal: $2 million
Charities plans to raise $2 million to meet its financial goal to acquire a facility. This includes the following costs: $1 million for building purchase; $650,000 for renovation and improvements; $100,000 for furnishings and equipment; and $250,000 for soft costs.
Initial Capital Received
Charities was successfully awarded bond bills of $500,000 each from the Prince George’s County Office of the County Executive and the State of Maryland. Through its own fundraising efforts, Charities has secured more than $160,000 including funds currently held in an investment portfolio.
Fundraising Plan
Our 400+ members have been asked to commit to an individual or family pledge in support of the capital campaign. In addition, one major fundraiser is planned each year. The Ivy Cruise to the Carribean will support this effort.
